USDA Miami Plant Protection Quarantine Inspection Station

Miami, FL
Performed forensic investigation of cracks in concrete slab on grade and precast cement terrazzo stair treads and exterior wall efflorescence at the 60,000 SF quarantine facility located on the grounds of Miami International Airport. Investigation required partial wall demolition and bore scope examination to locate source of water entry. Analysis determined water entry at parapet coping.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Customs & Border Patrol Stations

Continental United States
Structural design for the expansion of solar power generating capabilities at autonomous monitoring sites at confidential locations in the northeast US. This included analysis and design for structural steel and extruded aluminum used to support battery banks and photovoltaic arrays in extreme environments with temps as low as -20°F. Locations are only accessible by helicopter so innovative erection techniques were employed.

U.S. Department of Agriculture, Richard B Russell Research Center

Athens, GA
Forensic investigation of cracks and rust colored stains on limestone facade using both destructive and nondestructive examination techniques. Creation of plans and specifications needed to repair exterior building panels once investigation was complete and cause of damage was discovered.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Seismic Screening Studies

New Madrid Seismic Zone and Puerto Rico
Seismic screening (studies) to quantify the vulnerability of non-structural building components and contents during a seismic event. These studies were conducted at the Main VA Medical Centers in San Juan (PR), Little Rock and North Little Rock (AR), St. Louis – Jefferson Barracks Division and John Cochrane Division, John J. Pershing – Poplar Bluff (MO), and the VA Medical Center in Marion (IL). Deficiencies were quantified and construction estimates were generated.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Structural Peer Reviews

Continental United States
Structural Peer Review of construction documents including plans, specifications, and calculations for physical security design of new outpatient clinics including site, architectural, MEP, structural blast and progressive collapse. The VA healthcare facilities include locations in Montgomery (AL), Tallahassee (FL), Fayetteville (NC), Billings (MT), Greeneville (SC), Austin (TX), Laredo (TX), and McAllen (TX).

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Medical Center Assessment

Miami, Florida
Structural condition assessment and rehabilitation planning for a 793,206 SF medical center facility. The assessment was performed to identify needed maintenance, repair and rehabilitation. Adaptive reuse of facility and retrofitting for code compliance were also evaluated. Performed visual observation, field measuring, photographing, probing and sampling, field and laboratory testing, numerical analyses, checking code compliance, and thorough documentation and report preparation including current use plans and allowable live load plans.

USDA Fruit and Tree Nut Research Station, Water Tower

Byron, GA
Condition assessment and OSHA review of 120 ft tall, 50,000 gallon water tower built in 1956. Inspections were conducted in accordance with OSHA Standards for General Industry 29 CFR 1910 and American Water Works Association (AWWA) D100-05.

Department of Veterans Affairs, Cape Canaveral National Cemetary

Cape Canaveral, FL
Structural Peer Review of construction documents including plans, specifications, and cost estimates for an approximately 95 acre, phase 1 new cemetery development set to open in 2015. Project included a steel framed administration building with masonry shear walls and columns founded on reinforced concrete spread footings, a maintenance building framed with masonry walls and cold formed steel trusses, and various masonry outbuildings.

Austin (TX) VA Outpatient Clinic, Technical Peer Review

Austin, TX
Structural Peer Review of construction documents including plans, specifications, and calculations for the physical security design of a new $224 million dollar, 255,483 SF, 3-story, steel frame superstructure, supported by drilled pier foundations in highly expansive soils. Project included a braced frame lateral system and blast design including progressive collapse and glazing design. Applicable Codes: IBC 2012; VA Structural Design Manual, H-18-8 VA Seismic Design Requirements 2006; VA Physical Security Design Manual; ACI 318 and AISC.

McAllen (TX) VA Outpatient Clinic, Technical Peer Review

McAllen, TX
Structural Peer Review of construction documents including plans, specifications, and calculations for physical security design of a new $20 million dollar, single-story, 51,675 SF outpatient clinic (OPC) including site, architectural, MEP, structural blast and progressive collapse. The new OPC includes specialty services including primary care, mental health, specialty care and diagnostic services. Applicable Codes: IBC 2012; VA Structural Design Manual, H-18-8 VA Seismic Design Requirements 2006, VA Physical Security Design Manual, ACI 318, and AISC.

McClellan Memorial Veteran’s Hospital, Seismic Screening

Little Rock, AR

Seismic Screening Study to quantify the vulnerability of non-structural building components and contents during a seismic event at this 834,000 SF hospital in Little Rock, AR. Examined existing construction drawings, conducted visual surveys, collected photographic documentation, quantified deficiencies, and prepared cost estimates for seismic upgrades. Screening included evaluating glazing, facades, elevators, parapets, contents and light fixtures to see if they need bracing, reinforcing, or other restraints to prevent the item from being damaged, or damaging other items, during an earthquake.

Marion (IL) VA Facility Condition Assessment, Seismic Screening

Marion, IL
Seismic Screening Study to quantify the vulnerability of non-structural building components and contents during a seismic event at this 327,000 SF hospital. Examined existing construction drawings, conducted visual surveys, collected photographic documentation, quantified deficiencies, and prepared cost estimates for seismic upgrades. Screening included evaluating glazing, facades, elevators, parapets, contents and light fixtures to see if they need bracing, reinforcing or other restraints to prevent the item from being damaged, or damaging other items, during an earthquake. Deficiencies were quantified and construction estimates were generated.

San Juan (PR) VA Facility Condition Assessment, Seismic Screening

San Juan, Puerto Rico
Seismic Screening Study to quantify the vulnerability of non-structural building components and contents during a seismic event at this 565,840 SF medical center located within a high risk region of seismic activity. Because the facility had not been previously screened, it was necessary to evaluate all the functional areas within the main hospital to determine a reasonable accurate quantity of deficiencies. Examined existing construction drawings, conducted visual surveys, collected photographic documentation, quantified deficiencies and prepared cost estimates for seismic upgrades.

Richard B Russell Research Center, Auditorium Roof Spall Repair

Athens, GA
Performed inspection and engineering study of waterproofing systems and structural components of underground auditorium roof. Above the subject area, there is a building sidewalk, a driveway bordered by concrete curbs, sidewalk, marble steps, and a plaza with marble pavers and planters around the perimeter. Covering materials, including concrete sidewalks and marble pavers, were selectively demolished to expose the structure from above. Prepared condition assessment report and provided recommendations for remedial work and cost estimates for needed repairs.
